Ohio Smart Schools
Ohio needs to be smart about how it invests in education. The state must find ways to give its 1.8 million students a world-class education that will allow them and the state to thrive in an increasingly competitive global economy – while at the same time making the best use of limited resources in the context of an ongoing economic downturn. Ohio Smart Schools, a collaborative, nonpartisan initiative of Ohio Education Matters, has been seeking ideas and approaches that will allow the state to achieve innovative education reform against a budgetary picture that likely will get worse before it gets better. An extensive series of findings from our in-depth research will be released throughout the first few months of 2011.
Ohio's Road to High-Quality Digital Learning: An analysis of Ohio's performance on the Nation's Report Card on Digital Learning
On the heels of the inaugural meeting of Ohio's Digital Learning Task Force, which is charged with expanding innovative education policy in state, KnowledgeWorks subsidiary Ohio Education Matters Ohio has released an analysis of Ohio’s performance on the first ever national report on digital learning. The policy report, titled “Ohio’s Road to High Quality Digital Learning,” was released the day after the National Report Card on Digital Learning was announced by Digital Learning Now at the National Summit on Education reform in San Francisco. The National Report Card gave the state high marks for its work while challenging it to improve in other areas.
The report card grades each state based on its alignment with the 10 Elements of High Quality Digital Learning developed last fall, including access, personalized learning and quality choices.

Moving from Vision to Reality: Ohio's Second Round of the Race to the Top
Ohio ended the first round of the RttT process in an enviable position: Having landed in the Top Ten among the 41 initial applicants and with no major rethinking called for, Ohio officials can concentrate on strengthening its proposed reforms, filling in the details and building more support for their plan. If the state is careful about revising its application to ensure those pieces are in place, Ohio’s chances appear strong to be one of the 10 to 15 winners expected to receive funding in the next round of Race to the Top.
